"40 acres and a mule"
- The phrase "40 acres and a mule" originated from Special Field Order No. 15, issued by Union General William T. Sherman in January 1865. This order aimed to set aside land along the Atlantic coast of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida for the settlement of formerly enslaved people.
- The order stated that "each family shall have a plot of not more than forty acres of tillable ground". The army would also lend mules to help with farming.
- The order was a response to the disruptions to the institution of slavery caused by the Civil War and a desire to provide economic opportunities for the newly freed population.
- The order was the result of a meeting between Sherman and 20 black pastors in Savannah, Georgia.
- After President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, President Andrew Johnson rescinded Special Field Order No. 15 and returned the land to its former Confederate owners. This meant that the promise of "40 acres and a mule" was never fully realized.
- The failure to deliver on this promise had a profound and lasting impact on the economic and social status of Black Americans in the South.
- Many former slaves were forced to work on the land as sharecroppers, a system that often kept them in debt and dependent on white landowners.
- The concept of "40 acres and a mule" continues to be a symbol of the unfulfilled promise of reparations for the descendants of enslaved people.
